Help for customers with septic tanks or cesspools

Following the recent heavy rain and unusually high levels of ground water, we’d like to offer some tips for customers who are not on mains drainage and may be experiencing problems.

Septic tank and treatment plant problems
When ground water rises it can cause saturation around the drainage area, where liquid waste would normally overflow into a soakaway and disperse into the ground. This can force sewage up to ground level or back fill into the drains.

What you can do:

  • Divert ground water from the drainage area with extra pipes, allowing the water to flow to a less saturated area;
  • Check there is no blockage in the drains and pipes using a jet wash or drain rods – avoid putting wet wipes, grease and soap powder into the system;
  • In the longer term, design landscaping, roof gutters and foundation drains to divert excess water away from the septic tank.

Cesspool problems
A cesspool is a sealed unit, therefore reducing the amount of water that goes into the tank during extremely wet periods will help.

What you can do:

  • Take showers rather than baths – 33.33 baths = 2000 gallons!
  • Make sure there are no leaking taps or toilet systems;
  • Use the lowest number of rinses on washing machines and dishwashers;
  • Don’t flush a lot of water into the tank at once;
  • Make sure gutters and surface water for adjacent areas of ground are kept away from the soakaway area;
  • Don’t allow anything heavy near the soakaway as this can crush the soil, compacting it and allowing a more sponge like condition;
  • Avoid planting trees and shrubs around the soakaway as roots can clog up the ground;
  • Check for blockages in the drains and pipes using a jet wash or drain rods and avoid putting wet wipes, grease and soap powder into the system;
  • Use water sensibly.
