More than 650,000 children have taken part in the Southern Water Learn to Swim programme with 85 clubs and pools now involved.
MTS are proud sponsors of Learn to Swim and we attended a recent seminar event where swimming instructors share expert knowledge and the most up-to-date training techniques. There were inspiring sessions on teaching children with disabilities, skills for safe swimming in open water and introducing children to snorkelling.
Olympic gold medallist Duncan Goodhew MBE has been the Learn to Swim ambassador since the scheme launched in 1992. Duncan was joined at this event by former Senior Aircraftsman Mike Goody who took part in Learn to Swim as a child. Mike was seriously injured in Afghanistan in 2008 and has returned to swimming to help rebuild his life following the loss of his left leg and suffering with PTSD. Mike won four gold medals at the inaugural Invictus Games – he’s pictured above right with Duncan Goodhew and Jackie Hall, MTS Communications Officer.
Each year Learn to Swim rewards the courage and determination of children who have learned to swim against the odds or performed exceptionally at the Achiever Awards.
