Blocked Drains

Faulty and blocked outside drains can cause major problems, including flooding and pollution. We offer expert advice on the best and most cost effective solutions for you.

Drain problems are unpleasant at best, destructive to health and property at worst.

We pinpoint any blockages, damage or other faults with your outside drains and advise on the best way to rectify any problems. Using our fleet of CCTV units, our CCTV survey crews can access even the most awkwardly positioned manholes to get a 360 degree picture of what is going on underground. Once we’ve identified the problem we’ll advise you whether jet cleaning can remove the problem or if a repair is necessary.

Drain Repair Options

We offer a range of cost-effective drain repair options including pipe re-lining. Pipe re-lining doesn’t involve any digging and returns a drain to better-than-new condition at a fraction of the cost of replacement.

Signs of Blocked Drains

The most obvious sign of a drain problem is an unpleasant smell, another giveaway is when sinks or baths take longer than usual to drain. The water in toilets rises after flushing when there is a blockage.

How to Unblock a Drain

  • If you suspect you have a blocked drain, the first thing to do is to inspect the area you think might be blocked to see if you can identify what's causing the issue.  The most common cause of blocked outside drains is a build up of debris such as silt, leaves or waste from pipes. This is especially common around grates and guttering.  If the blockage is around your sink discharge pipes, the cause could well be a build up of grease or fat that is trapping other particles.
  • If your inspection doesn't reveal any obvious cause to your blocked outside drain, the blockage may be deeper inside the drainage system.  You may want to lift manhole covers to see if you can identify the cause.
  • If the cause is a visible blockage, you can take steps to remove this yourself. If, however, you can't identify the cause of the blockage, it's time to call in expert help.

Who is Responsible for your Drains?

  • As a householder, you’re responsible for drains within your property boundary, but not for private sewers shared with another property owner or for the section of drain which lies outside of your property boundary.
  • If you live in rented accommodation and you have an issue with your drains, you should call your landlord, letting agent or housing association in the first instance.
  • If you’re unsure who is responsible for a problem drain, call your local water company who will be able to offer free advice.
