Our work clearing a London sewer received national media coverage when the weight of the fatberg was revealed as equivalent to a small bungalow.
Described as “huge and disgusting” by Matt Rimmer, head of waste networks at our customer Thames Water, the fatberg was clogging the sewer beneath Yabsley Street in London’s Canary Wharf.
The MTS crews worked tirelessly using a combination of powered water jets and hand tools to clear the rock-like debris heap. The fatberg was formed from a mixture of oil, grease and fat along with unflushable items such as wet wipes and nappies.
Chris Henderson, MTS Sales Director said; “These were difficult and unpleasant conditions for our crews, who are specialists in this kind of confined space work. This part of the sewer clean took two weeks to remove more than 176 tonnes of foul waste from the sewer. Left unattended this blockage could have caused sewage to spill into homes – please think carefully about what you flush down the toilet.”
The story of the fatberg has been featured in a range of national media including; BBC News, Sky News, The Guardian, ITV News and many more.
