MTS works to repair burst water main in Hastings

The rising main at Coombs Water Pumping Station in Hastings burst on 21 June, causing localised flooding and the beginning of a major emergency repair operation.

MTS responded to the first emergency call-out with two 4k gallon tankers to attend a flooded car park in Bexhill Road. This was shortly followed by a further 10 tankers to deal with flooding in Cinque Ports Way in Hastings.

The following day, MTS supplied two additional deep lifting super suction units (SSTs), a pipe lorry with 300m of hose, a supervisor and a banksman. We also deployed seven Hydrainer pumps to keep up with the water flow and help load the tankers more quickly.

Southern Water took over the repair works on the afternoon of 22 June and MTS provided a total of 24 4k gallon tankers to remove water - a combination of our own vehicles and subcontractors’ vehicles.

At 10.30pm the leak had been slowed down enough to release 16 tankers until the evening of 24 June when they returned to assist with further repairs.

By the morning of Saturday 25 June the situation was under sufficient control to allow most tankers to leave site. The MTS supervisory team remained to monitor and maintain the temporary repair.

MTS organised and managed the disposal sites for all the tankering throughout the incident, using Galley Hill WPS and Bexhill and Hastings STC.

24 MTS tankers were back in action to complete the final repairs overnight on 5/6 July. The job was completed successfully with zero injuries, zero impact on the environment and zero impact on bathing waters.

Throughout this emergency response situation, MTS has maintained delivery of all planned works.

MTS worked flexibly to prioritise and reallocate resources, using extra capacity from within the business. In addition, we used resources from other supply chain partners and sub-contractors to ensure the best solution for our customer, Southern Water.
