Surface water management for Dover Harbour Board

An MTS crew recently cleared a series of gullies on the seafront at Dover, as part of a cleaning programme for the Dover Harbour Board.

The Dover Harbour Board was originally established in 1606 and it administers and maintains the Port of Dover and all its facilities, as well as developing local resources to meet future demands. 

The Port of Dover is Europe’s busiest ferry port, a vital international gateway for the movement of passengers and trade. It is also an award-winning cruise port, the second busiest in the UK and hosts some of the world’s most prestigious cruise lines. Other successful businesses include a cargo terminal, a top award-winning marina and several niche activities.

Dover itself is also a tourist destination in its own right. The promenade and seafront has been revitalised in recent years, making it an attractive area for visitors and local residents alike.

The seafront gullies were blocked with silt, plant growth and debris as shown in the photos above. This was preventing surface water from the road, cycle path and seafront promenade from draining away. These gullies help to carry the surface water to the highway drains.

The gullies contain traps to collect detritus such as leaves and silt which could cause a blockage in the drainage system. In Dover, these traps had become completely full and required emptying in order to continue to work efficiently.

Using an MTS super combination unit, our crew loosened the solid material with water. Once suspended in a more liquid state, the waste was vacuumed into the tanker for disposal at an appropriate reception site.

Finally, the gullies were given a powerful jet wash to fully clear any remaining detritus and to ensure that the traps are fully clear.

We dispose of all waste from interceptors, gullies and culverts responsibly and in compliance with current regulations. All disposal by MTS is fully traceable with a complete audit trail and we always provide the customer with documentation to show that the waste has been disposed of correctly.
